Health Coaching

Accountability + support so that you can keep recovering after PT is done

So you’ve finished physical therapy.
What next?

  • Are you armed with a boatload of PT exercises but still feeling confused about how to start your “new normal” daily life?

  • Wondering how to keep strengthening and safely pushing your limit without reinjuring yourself?

  • Seeing the potential for more improvement even though your PT has boxed you into the “maintenance care” category?

  • Having complicated feelings about your recovery and need to talk to someone about it?

Is your recovery taking forever, and you just want to talk to someone who gets it?

Struggling to move past chronic pain? Coaching can make a difference.

Arlene Cavan, Certified Health Coach, stands with her arms gently crossed and smiling at the camera. She is in a bright, sunny office in downtown San Francisco.

Arlene Cavan, PT, DPT, Certified Health Coach

Helping you thrive beyond chronic pain is my specialty as a certified health coach.

If you’re feeling isolated in this oh-so-slow healing process, and you don’t want to keep talking your friends’ ears off about the health roller coaster you’ve been on, coaching can help.

More than having a sounding board for your health woes, coaching is a way to empower yourself to set specific, measurable goals with actionable steps as you move forward in your continued recovery.

It’s a way to activate your inner strengths, tap into the resources around you, and make self-directed lifestyle changes — all while benefiting from an accountability partner who has a wealth of medical knowledge and is always in your corner.

I want you to know that with support and accountability, you can take steps toward real success.

You didn’t come this far
to only come this far.

Real accountability.

Coaching is a tool to help you set clear and actionable steps as you move forward in your continued recovery.

Real support.

Recovering is easier when you have someone who can guide you through the valleys and share in celebrating your wins.

Real success.

If you’ve “graduated” from PT but you know there’s still more healing you can do, coaching can help you get there.

  • While there are similarities between physical therapy (PT) and coaching, they are fundamentally different methods of support in your journey to overall health and wellness.

    Physical therapy:

    • Focuses on clinical-based treatment planning for specific diagnoses.

    • Aims to help you relieve physical pain, build muscular strength, move more easily, and function better in your daily life.

    • Takes place in a provider’s office or, in the case of telehealth, over secure video conference.

    Coaching:

    • Focuses on problem-solving through education, goal-setting, accountability, emotional support, and monitoring results.

    • Aims to empower you to make self-directed lasting changes so that you can manage your health on your own.

    • Takes place over secure video conference or phone call.

Although I’m a physical therapist in my “day job,” I don’t enter into a patient-provider relationship with my coaching clients like I do with my PT patients.

As a coach, I don’t work with insurance companies, nor do I make diagnoses or perform clinical assessments.

  • Our coaching sessions will focus on helping you improve your overall health through education, empowerment, accountability, goal-setting, emotional support, and monitoring results.

The health coaching sessions I offer typically have an emphasis on evidence-based knowledge of orthopedics (the musculoskeletal system), nutritional information, and functional lifestyle medicine.

I typically meet with my coaching clients one-on-one for an hour each week until they are able to achieve their health goals.
